KLM Begins Amsterdam-Havana Flights

Direct flights from Amsterdam to Havana began last week, according to Cuba's Ministry of Tourism. The new flights will ease travel to Cuba from the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

The new route will be available three times a week: Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays; MD-11 aircraft will be used with a seating configuration for 285 passengers (261 in economy and 24 for business class.

COMMENT: The Netherlands is the ninth largest source of tourists to Cuba with an estimated 24,000 tourists traveling to the island annually.

Cuba hopes to receive a record 2.7 million tourists this year who will enhance tourism as the second most important industry after health care.

Currently, the following carriers offer flights to Havana:
Air-France, Iberia, Air-Europa, American Airlines, Lufthansa Airlines, United Airlines, Martinair, Continental Airlines y Air Transat.
